Singapore Airlines AppChallenge
'How might we enhance the seamlessness and effectiveness of digital transactions made by Scoot passengers onboard?'
In my second year at Polytechnic, I teamed up with my friends Kah Num and Guan Wei for an exciting venture—the Singapore Airlines AppChallenge, Tertiary Track. Spurred by the challenge announced in a school email and the prospect of attractive prizes, we dived in from May 15 to June 25, 2023, for the submission period. 15 May 2023 - 25 June 2023: SUBMISSION PERIOD
As regular Scoot customers, we identified the inefficiencies of the traditional ordering process and were eager to refine it for a better customer experience. Therefore, we chose to tackle the challenge statement: 'How might we enhance the seamlessness and effectiveness of digital transactions made by Scoot passengers onboard?'. Our solution hinged on Bluetooth technology to facilitate offline transactions. We envisioned an integrated app system that would allow passengers to interact with a dynamic menu, including AR visuals of food and a 'favorites' feature for future orders, while the admin could manage orders and track popular items on an iPad dashboard. This system was designed to process transactions post-flight once passengers landed.
26 June - 27 July 2023: SHORTLISTING & MENTORSHIP
My team got into Finalist! The news of our advancement to the finals ignited a firework of emotions—we were overjoyed, overwhelmed, and, above all, determined. Making it to the top 10 out of 286 teams from 7 countries was no small feat, and it filled us with a blend of pride and a thirst for more. Securing a spot as a Finalist opened the door to an intense mentorship period. This stage was demanding but incredibly rewarding. Guidance from industry experts at Singapore Airlines, Amex, and Amadeus proved to be priceless, honing our project to meet the demands of the real world with greater precision. 28 July - GRAND FINALE On July 28, 2023, we took to the stage at Krislab to present our ideas to the senior management of Singapore Airlines Group. It was our debut in such a high-profile setting and, while we didn't secure a spot in the top three, the experience was incredibly valuable. The AppChallenge was much more than a contest; it was a significant learning experience. Through interactions with fellow students from both local and international universities, we gleaned new understanding of our project's strong points and potential improvements. This reinforced our dedication to lifelong learning and innovation. We came away with a sense of accomplishment and a wealth of new insights, ready for the next steps in our journey.
